Jiarong, an Innovative Leader in Using Technology

Chen
Jiarong is a stockbreeding specialist with senior
ranking. She graduated from the Northeast Agricultural
University in 1963 and works at the Sichuan Provincial
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Research Institute
where she has been in charge of the "experimental
chicken farms" which keeps her busy rushing
about in the grassroots areas all year around.
During the 80's of the last century, she took
charge of the, "Comprehensive Experimental
Studies on Farmer Households Raising Small Flocks
of Chickens", "Promotion of 100,000
Units of Improved-variety Eggs","Raising
the Economic Benefits of |

| Larg-sized Chicken Farmers and the Social
Benefits of Technical Development" and other scientific
research projects which all obtained notable economic
and social benefits. The Nongyou Research Institute was
founded in 1988 in Gongping Town of Wenjiang District
in order to provide a technological backbone for the "hatching"
of raising chickens in cities and the countryside in the
entire province. A "technical vocational school"
was jointly established by the institute and the educational
committee of Wenjiang in 1990 in order to coordinate with
the implementation of the National "Prairie Blaze
Project." Over 1000 students were trained in raising
chickens in the countryside and the school has fostered
a technical backbone of over 300 personnel in raising
chickens for Wenjiang and several other organizations
in the province.After the Nongyou students go back, most
of them become the local experts in raising chickens.

Li Zhengliang
for example, who is from Wenjiang County, that currently
is raising over 20,000 chickens from the couple
of hundred he had previously. Zhou Lin of Tuqiao
Village, which is close to Dujiangyan City, came
to the school for help at the very beginning of
its existence and after returning home started his
own chicken farm with a scale of between five thousand
to six thousand chickens and at the same time obtained
am intermediate professional title for the Animal
Husbandry and Veterinary profession. Chen Shoufu
of Shimian County started off with 1,000 chickens
and has expanded to 10,000, which has driven the
chicken raising industry in the local area. Wang
Jianzhong of Tingjiang Village near Chongzhou City
was responsible for pushing his fellow villagers
on after he received training and they have raised
a total of no less than 100,000 chickens. Some of
these people mentioned-above have become model workers
in the province and municipalities while others
have become the committee members of the Chinese
People's Political Consultative Conference (C.P.P.C.C.)
and representatives in the National People's |

| Congress. Nongyou Research Institute has
become a famous leader in the breeding and it looked upon
as somewhat of a "military school" for preparing
a capable and modernized army for the industry. Because
of this, the research institute has obtained the recognition
from the leaders at the upper levels and the various sectors
of society.Chen Jiarong has successively been awarded
the first prize from the Xinghuo Plan, second prize from
the Ministry of Agriculture's Bumper Harvest Plan, 7 awards
for scientific achievement from the Sichuan Provincial
People's Government, 3 awards from the Sichuan Provincial
Office of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, 3 scientific
advancement awards from the Chengdu People's Government,
was appraised as "Sanba Red Flag Bearer of Sichuan
Province (an award given to women who are models) "
in 1988 and was given the title of "Outstanding Worker
in the Science and Technology Fields in Sichuan Province"
in 1989. She was deemed an outstanding women entrepreneur
in all of China in 1994 and the Women's Federation of
Sichuan Province and the Provincial Woman Entrepreneur
Association granted her the designation of being a "Pioneering
Star in Business" in 1994. She is the former director
of the China Poultry Association, the former vice-chair
of the Sichuan Poultry Association, the former vice-chair
of the Chengdu City Poultry Association and is currently
the vice-chair of the Sichuan Women Entrepreneur's Association.
